The GED is fully computer-based. The Mississippi GED exam costs $144 for the four tests ($36 per module) when taken at a test center or online. The price for online and on-site testing is the same.
To qualify for taking the GED exam online, however, you’ll have to attain a “green” (likely to pass) result on the GED Ready official practice test. This test is available at the website GED.com and costs $6.99. You’ll have to buy four of these practice tests (one for each sub-exam), so that’ll cost you an extra $28.
When taken at a testing center, the HiSET exam is available in a paper-based or computer-based format. Online HiSET testing (the HiSET-At-Home exam) must always be taken on a computer.
The five HiSET subtests cost (when taken at a test center) $17.75 per subtest for the computer-based version (so $88.75 overall) and $22 (so $110 overall) for the paper-based version.
If you fail a subtest, you have two retakes at a discounted rate (just $10 for the testing center fee). You must use these retakes within one year. After that period, the original fees apply again. This does NOT apply to online testing.
In Mississippi, you don’t need to wait to take a retest if you fail a GED subject test, but when you fail a subtest three times, there’ll be a waiting period of 60 days before you can retest again.
The GED exam is scored on a 100-200 scale.
HiSET scoring occurs on a 0-20 scale. On each sub-exam, the passing score is 8 (out of 20). Your total HiSET score must be at least 45, and your HiSET essay result must be at least 2 (out of 8).
Recently, the Mississippi College Board announced that GED testers may use earlier HiSET scores and vice versa to earn the Mississippi High School Equivalency (HSE) diploma.
